Synopsis from publisher:
The first batch of the Sandman’s adventures are chronicled in this volume reprinting stories from ADVENTURE COMICS #40-59, NEW YORK WORLD’S FAIR 1939, and NEW YORK WORLD’S FAIR 1940 (circa 1940-41). Plus, an intro by Jim Amash, co-editor of Alter Ego.

Notes:

This publication is the first, and so far only, in a series of Archive Editions reprinting stories from the 1930s and ’40s starring the original Sandman from various comic book series. All material in this publication was written by Gardner Fox. Bert Christman illustrated the Sandman stories reprinted from Adventure Comics #40 to #43, and New York World’s Fair #1, which was originally sold exclusively at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. Creig Flessel handled art for the Sandman features in issues #44, #45 and #50 to #59. He also created the art that appears on the cover of this publication. Ogden Whitney provided art for the stories from issues #46 to #48. Chad Grothkopf illustrated the stories for issue #49 and New York World’s Fair #2, and also provided inks for the stories from issues #55 to 59.

The first Sandman character from DC Comics continued appearing as a regular feature in Adventure Comics until issue #102 in 1945. These stories have yet to be collected or reprinted. The character was revived in 1993 for the Sandman Mystery Theatre comic book series, which has been reprinted in a series of graphic novels.
